Computing Community Consortium Blog

The goal of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) is to catalyze the computing research community to debate longer range, more audacious research challenges; to build consensus around research visions; to evolve the most promising visions toward clearly defined initiatives; and to work with the funding organizations to move challenges and visions toward funding initiatives. The purpose of this blog is to provide a more immediate, online mechanism for dissemination of visioning concepts and community discussion/debate about them.

The following is a letter from CCC Chair Mark D. Hill from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Hello:

Tonight the Computing Community Consortium transitions leadership and members, including me stepping down as Chair. Congratulations to the new CCC Chair Liz Bradley, Vice Chair Dan Lopresti, and new members Kathleen Fisher, William D. Gropp, Brian LaMacchia, Melanie Moses, Helen Nissenbaum, and Holly Yanco. I look forward to great accomplishments!

Thanks to all the current and former CCC members who have contributed to CCC’s continued successes these last several years, especially those rotating off the council: Juliana Freire, Keith Marzullo, Greg Morrisett, Jen Rexford, and Ben Zorn. Thanks to the staff who enable CCC to flourish: CRA Executive Director Andy Bernat, Sandra Corbett, Helen Wright, Khari Douglas, Peter Harsha, Maddy Hunter, Sabrina Jacob, and especially CCC Director Ann Schwartz Drobnis. Thanks to NSF for their support and counsel, including Nina Amla, Mitra Basu, Ken Calvert, Erwin Gianchandani, Joydip Kundu, and NSF CISE ADs Jim Kurose and Margaret Martonosi. Thanks also to the long line of former CCC Chairs who enabled me to chair a strong organization: Ed Lazowska, Susan Graham, Greg Hager, and Beth Mynatt. Leading CCC has been a great privilege, in part, due to being able to work with such an accomplished group of can-do people.

It is bittersweet to step down after my two-year term as CCC Chair.  My CCC work began before I was on the council via my leading the 2012 whitepaper, “21st Century Computer Architecture.” I then joined CCC as council member 2013-21, executive committee member 2014-21, Vice Chair 2016-18, and Chair 2018-20. I am, however, not going too far away. I will complete co-leading CI Fellows 2020 this summer, serve as CCC Chair Emeritus for another year, and I was elected to the CRA Board of Directors for 2020-23.

Thanks to all of you for enabling what successes we have had! Below is a link to a spreadsheet with over 50 rows listing some of what we accomplished during the last three years corresponding to the terms of those rotating off.
