Computing Community Consortium Blog

The goal of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) is to catalyze the computing research community to debate longer range, more audacious research challenges; to build consensus around research visions; to evolve the most promising visions toward clearly defined initiatives; and to work with the funding organizations to move challenges and visions toward funding initiatives. The purpose of this blog is to provide a more immediate, online mechanism for dissemination of visioning concepts and community discussion/debate about them.

ACM logoThe Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) just announced their 2019 ACM Fellows. The ACM Fellows award is ACM’s most prestigious member grade, which “comprise an elite group that represents less than 1% of the Association’s global membership.” The 2019 list honors 58 members of ACM for their contributions to computing.

Among the 2019 Fellows is Computing Community Consortium (CCC) Council Member Maria Gini (University of Minnesota), recognized for her “for contributions to robotics and multi-agent systems and a lifelong commitment to diversity in computing.” Maria joined the CCC this year and is a member of the Health and Computing Task Force.

Other 2019 Fellows include past CCC Council members Elizabeth Churchill (Google) for “contributions to human-computer interaction and service to ACM” and Robin Murphy (Texas A&M) “for contributions in founding and advancing the field of computing for disasters and robotics.” While on the Council, Elizabeth was one of the planning committee members for the Cyber Social Learning System (CSLS) series of workshops. Robin authored many white papers and reports both during and after her time on the CCC including “A National Initiative in Emergency Informatics” and “Toward a Science of Autonomy for Physical Systems: Disaster.” She also organized the 2012 Computing for Disaster Management Workshop, which lead to the CRICIS: Critical Real-time Computing and Information Systems Report.

Congratulations to all the Fellows on their significant achievements! To see the full list of Fellows see the ACM Press Release.
