Computing Community Consortium Blog

The goal of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) is to catalyze the computing research community to debate longer range, more audacious research challenges; to build consensus around research visions; to evolve the most promising visions toward clearly defined initiatives; and to work with the funding organizations to move challenges and visions toward funding initiatives. The purpose of this blog is to provide a more immediate, online mechanism for dissemination of visioning concepts and community discussion/debate about them.

Virtual Registration Open for the NSF Workshop on Sustainable Computing for Sustainability

The NSF Workshop on Sustainable Computing for Sustainability has just released a virtual registration link to attend the workshop remotely on April 16-17, 2024. This workshop, which the CCC’s own Chandra Krintz is on the steering committee for, seeks to identify open challenges in how to harness computing to tackle sustainability problems, and in ensuring that computing accounts for sustainability in its own development and operation.   Due to space limitations, the workshop will follow a hybrid format with approximately 100 in-person attendees at the National Science Foundation’s headquarters in Alexandria, VA, and remote participation feasible through a zoom webinar. CRA Accessible Technology for All Workshop Summary

On February 22-23, 2023 in Washington, DC, the Computing Research Association (CRA) held the Accessible Technology for All Workshop. The workshop was attended by over 40 participants from academia, industry, and government and 20 remote participants. Building Resilience to Climate Driven Extreme Events with Computing Innovations: A Convergence Accelerator Workshop

The Computing Community Consortium just held a two-part workshop, “Building Resilience to Climate Driven Extreme Events with Computing Innovations”. The workshops were sponsored by the National Science Foundation’s new Directorate for Technology, Innovation and Partnership (TIP). TIP has a major initiative “Convergence Accelerator” that funds programs seeking to solve societal challenges through convergence research and innovation. Senior Editor of Communications of the ACM, Moshe Vardi, Shares Concern Over Lack of Incentive Structure in Cybersecurity

Moshe Y. Vardi, Computer Science Professor at Rice University and Senior Editor of Communications of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), wrote an article in the November 2022 issue of the Communications of the ACM magazine, Accountability and Liability in Computing. The article articulates his concerns for the slow progress and lack of conclusive knowledge on how to build secure information systems. Vardi speculates the issue is not due to a lack of technical advancements but a lack of incentives encouraging hardware security developments and solutions. The CCC Transitions Back to In-Person Workshops Following the Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted many aspects of the world and the way we do things. One of those aspects was conferences, as well as the in-person visioning activities considered to be the Computing Community Consortium’s (CCC) bread and butter. Mechanism Design for Improving Hardware Security – Register for January 13th Webinar

The Computing Community Consortium (CCC) will hold a visioning workshop on Mechanism Design for Improving Hardware Security during the summer of 2022 (exact date and location TBD). We seek short white papers to help create the agenda for the workshop and select attendees. Workshop organizers Simha Sethumadhavan (Columbia University) and Tim Sherwood (University of California Santa Barbara) will host an orientation webinar from 1 – 2:30 PM ET on Thursday, January 13th, 2022 to outline the goals of the workshop and expand on what they are looking for in the white papers.
