Computing Community Consortium Blog

The goal of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) is to catalyze the computing research community to debate longer range, more audacious research challenges; to build consensus around research visions; to evolve the most promising visions toward clearly defined initiatives; and to work with the funding organizations to move challenges and visions toward funding initiatives. The purpose of this blog is to provide a more immediate, online mechanism for dissemination of visioning concepts and community discussion/debate about them.

GECAT Project Announces Two New Funding Opportunities

The Global Initiative to Enhance @scale and Distributed Computing and Analysis Technologies (GECAT) project at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) has two exciting new funding opportunities. The GECAT project is part of the National Science Foundation’s Science Across Virtual Institutes (SAVI) program and is an extension of the NSF-funded Blue Waters project, which provides access to one of the world’s most powerful supercomputers and enables investigators to conduct breakthrough computational and big data research. Applications are now being accepted for Blue Waters Graduate Fellowships and Undergraduate Internships.  Blue Waters is a truly extraordinary supercomputer used by researchers across the country to gain new understanding of how viruses attack our bodies, the formation of galaxies and of severe storms, space weather, sub-atomic physics, and other challenging topics. ‘Solar Superstorms’ Combines Computational Science and Data Visualization

The 24-minute scientific documentary that was released this summer about the dynamics of the sun may soon be coming to a planetarium near you. “Solar Superstorms” is a new documentary that features data-driven visualizations that have been computed on the giant new supercomputing initiative, Blue Waters, based at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
