Computing Community Consortium Blog

The goal of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) is to catalyze the computing research community to debate longer range, more audacious research challenges; to build consensus around research visions; to evolve the most promising visions toward clearly defined initiatives; and to work with the funding organizations to move challenges and visions toward funding initiatives. The purpose of this blog is to provide a more immediate, online mechanism for dissemination of visioning concepts and community discussion/debate about them.

Future Directions for NSF Advanced Computing Infrastructure

October 20th, 2014 / in Announcements, NSF, Research News / by Helen Wright
cstb_header_nas_titleThe National Science Foundation (NSF) requested that the National Research Council (NRC) carry out a study examining anticipated priorities for advanced computing infrastructure in support of NSF-sponsored science and engineering research. The study encompasses advanced computing infrastructure activities and programs throughout NSF, including but not limited to, those of its Division on Advanced Cyberinfrastructure (ACI).

In response to this request, the NRC established the Committee on Future Directions for NSF Advanced Computing Infrastructure. The committee has begun its work by gathering and reviewing relevant materials, receiving testimony and comments from individuals, and identifying additional experts to receive testimony from along with additional information. Information is still being collected, but some important issues have begun to come into focus and an interim report has been released. The interim report is an initial compilation of issues that the committee believes will need to be considered as future NSF strategy, budgets, and programs for advanced computing infrastructure are developed.

Your feedback on this report and your comments on the future of advanced computing at NSF are welcome. You may provide feedback by email to the study director, Jon Eisenberg (jeisenbe@nas.edu) or through the project’s public feedback form.
